The route runs from Middleton Top in Derbyshire up to Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. It is possbile to ride the route in both south to north, and north to south directions. The south to north route from Middleton Top to Kirkby Stephen takes the west side of the Mary Townley Loop. The north to south route takes the east side of the Mary Townley Loop. The route offers approximately 6,700 m of ascent along with some superb trails through some wonderful British countryside.

There is no entry fee, no support, and no prizes. It is a self-timed Individual Time Trial (ITT) that can be challenged at any time. All that is provided is the inspiration, the official National Trail Pennine Bridleway website and a list of completion times. The route is established, mapped and well marked.
